Courage is one step ahead of fear

Jan 19, 2017

After my exam last Tuesday, I wanted to do something fun and relaxing during the week before lectures officially start. So the next day, my boyfriend and I went to visit St Paul's Cathedral. Last time we were there was June 2015 and you can check out the post here. But last time, we didn't visit the inside since we passed the last entry time and we didn't really think about it then.

First, we climbed up the dome to The Whispering Gallery. It's interesting to learn how the name derived from a charming quirk in its construction, which makes a whisper against its walls audible on the opposite side. We didn't try it out since there was quite a lot of people there already, but we did see other people trying and it seemed to work. Next, we climbed to The Stone Gallery, which encircles the outside of the dome, followed by The Golden gallery, which runs around the highest point of the outer dome.

I definitely recommend visiting St Paul's Cathedral and to reserve at least 3 hours for exploring, learning and enjoying the visit. We made a huge mistake thinking 1-2 hours would be enough for the visit, and in the end, we didn't have enough time for the cathedral floor or the crypt. Another thing, you're not allowed to take photos inside. But trust me, the interior, as well as the atmosphere, is spectacular and it's worth checking out in person.

Finally, if you're not afraid of heights, definitely challenge yourself to climb all the way up to The Golden Gallery. From the cathedral floor to The Golden Gallery, it's a total of 528 steps. It's not easy because of the spiral steps, and especially as you go further up, space becomes more narrow. But it's definitely worth it because the panoramic view of London is beautiful :)

"The mind can go in a thousand directions, but on this beautiful path, I walk in peace. With each step, the wind blows. With each step, a flower blooms."
